Joseph Kleinpeter and family papers, 1803-1895.

Over half of the items consist of land records, slave sales, mortgages, and John Kleinpeter succession documents. Financial records include bills for merchandise purchased and a record book containing cash expenditures, net proceeds, and accounts. This record book also includes entries of slave births, 1822-1852, and an undated entry reporting the number of slaves by cabin. Civil War period documents consist of military papers and two Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands labor contracts, 1865-1866. Two Plaquemine area newspapers and a facsimile of the first issue of the "Picayune" are present. The printed volume is a collection of Shakespeare's plays.

Joseph Kleinpeter, sugar planter of Variety Plantation in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, was the son of John Kleinpeter and Catherine Sharp. Joseph and Caroline Therese Dardenne, the widow of Jacob Brown, were wed in 1822; they had a number of children, including sons, John Charles and Joseph Sebastian.
